Renowned for its succulent native oysters, trendy beach huts and excellent fish restaurants, Whitstable still has a working harbour, narrow winding streets with period houses and a lively High Street lined with a wide selection of specialist shops, art galleries, pubs and interesting places to eat out. The pebbly beach is the place for bracing walks, with space to admire the sea views and stunning sunsets.

Tankerton, to the east of the town, has good local shops and a pleasant sea front, with cliff-top lawns sloping gently down to the award winning beach and promenade. There are tennis courts nearby, yacht and sailing clubs at Whitstable and Tankerton, and several golf courses in the area. Blean Woods, an RSPB nature reserve, has interesting woodland walks and nature trails.

Good Connections

London, only 65 miles away, is easily accessible by road and rail from Whitstable. The Cathedral City of Canterbury is six miles distant, with two stations offering main line links to London Victoria (journey time approximately 75 minutes). Ashford International Station and the Eurostar service are 22 miles away, and the Channel Tunnel Terminal at Folkestone 25 miles. Kent International Airport, offering low cost flights to Europe, is based at Manston, near Ramsgate.

Canterbury

The City of Canterbury offers excellent educational, cultural, leisure and shopping facilities. The magnificent Cathedral, ancient City walls, attractive gardens and museums attract visitors from around the world. The Marlowe Theatre and the Gulbenkian Theatre at the University of Kent host events from opera to pantomime to contemporary films and live acts. As well as public schools and top grammar schools, the City is home to the University of Kent at Canterbury, Christchurch University College, Canterbury College and the Kent Institute of Art and Design. Shopping is diverse, with department stores such as Fenwicks and other well known high street names, specialist shops and a major new retail development.
